SAN FRANCISCO — Jack Dorsey has become a household name in Silicon Valley thanks to his role as the chief executive and co-founder of Twitter, President Trump’s favourite megaphone.
People will sometimes mention, as an afterthought, that Mr. Dorsey also runs another start-up he helped found, the payment company Square.
Sometime in the very near future, though, the value of Mr. Dorsey’s distinctly less-sexy second company, wherehe tends to work in the afternoon, is likely to become more valuable than his more well-known first company, where he works in the morning, separated by a short walk between the two companies’ headquarters in San Francisco.
Thanks to its steadily ascending stock price, Square’s value — as measured by the value of its outstanding shares — has been closing in quickly on Twitter, which has seen its stock price stuck in neutral for months. On Wednesday, Square was worth $12.62 billion, or just $3 million less than Twitter. Just a year ago, Square was worth less than half as much.
If current trends continue, the two could switch places as soon as Thursday, whenTwitter announces its most recent quarterly financial results. Square, coming off five straight quarters of exceeding Wall Street expectations, will provide its results in November. (By one method of counting shares, including options given to employees, Square is already worth more than Twitter.)

Credit Jason Henry for The New York Times “Square — that’s a company that is well grounded for future success,” said Ron Shevlin, the director of research at Cornerstone Advisors. “Twitter? Who knows. They’ve got a gazillion users but they’ve struggled on the revenue side.”
MEDIATOR As the World Tweets, Social Media Chiefs Remain Tight-Lipped OCT. 15, 2017 Both of Mr. Dorsey’s children, as he is known to refer to the companies, bear the imprint of their creator and his careful, trimmed-down aesthetic.
But Mr. Dorsey’s eye for simple solutions has not been enough to turn around Twitter since he returned in 2015 to lead the company he helped found in 2006. He has failed to rein in the use and abuse of the service by trolls and political actors, and he has not found a convincing way to make money despite its ardent user base.
At Square, Mr. Dorsey has led one of Silicon Valley’s more understatedsuccess stories, built on the little plastic white square that allowed small businesses to accept credit card payments via their iPhones. Square has grown into a much broader financial services company, despite some hiccups, like a much-heralded partnership with Starbucks that flamed out.
Although Twitter’s overall revenue shrank 5 percent in the second quarter from the year before, expanding the company’s losses, at Square, revenue grew 26 percent, moving the company closer to profitability.
The divergent fate of Mr. Dorsey’s two companies can be understood simply as a matter of timing and control. When he began his second stint as Twitter’s chief executive in 2015, the company was already struggling and had a series of internal problems that were hard to change, including executive turnover and competing for strategic visions.
At Square, on the other hand, Mr. Dorsey was able to build the whole company from the ground up, with knowledge from Twitter of how things can go wrong.
“Square wasn’t Jack’s first rodeo,” said Randy Reddig, who was on the founding team at Square in 2009. “It was obvious early on at the company that he took lessons learned from his time at Twitter and applied them at Square.”
Mr. Reddig said that Mr. Dorsey’s education from Twitter’s fractious early years was particularly apparent in the control that Mr. Dorsey kept over hiring and compensation decisions at Square, with a focus on creating a loyal team.
Through Twitter and Square, Mr. Dorsey declined to comment for this article.
Mr. Dorsey’s success at Square and his trouble at Twitter also tell a broader story about Silicon Valley, where the boring, back-end businesses often end up generating more money than the flashy social networks and consumer services that capture the public’s eye.
Mr Dorsey trained Square’s sights on a mostly invisible business — electronic payments — that has momentum as more and more commerce moves online.
The big banks had aimed to challenge Venmo with their ownservice, Zelle, but that has not posed a credible challenge to either Venmo or Square Cash so far, the rankings show.
Mr. Dorsey and his team madeseveral early design choices with Square Cash that helped make it different from Venmo. As would be expected from Mr. Dorsey, Square’s app has a clean, green interface, compared with Venmo’s busy blue dashboard.
Square also made an apparently boring technical decision, to use the debit card networks rather than bank transfers, to move money around. That has made it easier for Square Cash to put money instantly into the bank accounts of its users, and to collect a fee for the service.
These differences appear to have made Square Cash morepopular with lower-income customers who more often need instant access to their money and who don’t have as wide a variety of credit cards and other financial options.
“We are reaching an audience that may not have a bank account or may not have a full suite of services from a bank,” Mr. Dorsey told analysts last quarter.
James Murdoch, the chief executive of 21st Century Fox, on Wednesday defended how the company responded to sexual harassment allegations against the former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly, stating that he did not know the size of Mr. O’Reilly’s $32 million settlement until recently.
It was the first time that Mr. Murdoch had publicly addressed the controversy since The New York Times reported over the weekend that the company had granted Mr. O’Reilly a contract extension the month after he agreed to the settlement with a longtime Fox News legal analyst. At the time, the company was aware of at least six settlements involving harassment allegations against Mr. O’Reilly.
“The settlement wasn’t a company settlement, and that was news to me when we saw the number the other day,” Mr. Murdoch said, speaking at the Paley International Council Summit, a media conference, in New York.
“At the time, what you do is you deal with what you know,” he added. “You investigate things thoroughly. You do the best job you can with that, and you try to make the right decision.”
In response to questions from The Times, 21st Century Fox has previously acknowledged that it was aware of the woman’s allegations against Mr. O’Reilly — which included harassment, a nonconsensual sexual relationship and the sending of pornography and that a settlement had been reached. The company has said that it considered the dispute a personal issue between Mr. O’Reilly and the woman, Lis Wiehl.

Bill O’Reilly Settled New Harassment Claim,Then Fox Renewed His Contract OCT. 21, 2017
Bill O’Reilly Thrives at Fox News, Even as Harassment Settlements Add Up APRIL 1, 2017
Top Fox News Lawyer, Dianne Brandi, Takes Voluntary Leave OCT. 6, 2017 When asked about whether the disclosure of Mr. O’Reilly’s $32 million settlement and his subsequent four-year contract worth $25 million a year posed a challenge to efforts to change the culture at Fox News in the wake of sexual harassment scandals at the network, Mr. Murdoch said that the critical question is how the company responds to claims.
“I can’t make sure that everyone in the business doesn’t behave badly at times, right?” he said. “What I can make sure is if we know something, we can react to that information. We can be decisive about it.”
Mr. Murdoch did not address how at the time that the companyrenewed Mr. O’Reilly’s contract it was aware of other settlements involving Mr. O’Reilly.
“It is easy, I think, from the outside, to look at it and say, ‘Well, didn’t you know that?’” he said. “We made a decision that is clear, and Ihope sends a really strong signal to all of my colleagues, to everyone in the industry, etc., that actuallythere are behaviors that are not to be tolerated, and we will continue to strive to live up to that.”
The news of Mr. O’Reilly’s $32 million settlement has raised questions about whether it will impinge the regulatory review of 21st Century Fox’s $15 billion bid for Sky, the European satellite giant. Mr. Murdoch said he expected the deal to be cleared in the first half of 2018.
Mr. Murdoch’s comments followedthe news Tuesday that UTA, Mr. O’Reilly’s longtime talent agency, planned to drop him as a client after his contract expires at the end of the year. In a statement, Mark Fabiani, a spokesman for Mr. O’Reilly, said, “Bill has already lined up newrepresentation.” He did not provide details about the new representation.
Gaming laptops are one of the things that every PC maker has prioritized at this year’s CES, with big names like Lenovo, and now Samsung, starting whole new sub-brands of gaming PCs. Samsung’s answer to Lenovo’s Legion is the Notebook Odyssey. The Odyssey begins with a 15-inch laptop in February and a 17-inch behemoth in April, both of which look like rejects from Alienware’s design interns. There’s an upsettingly high degree of unoriginality about these laptops, which could easily bear Acer’s Predator or Asus’ Republic of Gamers branding — they’re both cookie-cutter gaudy monstrosities.
Like Lenovo, Samsung is introducing a red-backlit keyboard on its lower-tier model and a multicolored keyboard on its higher-end laptop. Like a neophyte gaming PC maker, Samsung eschews high-end materials for a massive dollop of hollow plastic: I found flex both in the top lid of the Odyssey 17 and in the keyboard itself. A lot of flex. Samsung’s hinges on both Odyssey laptops are flimsy, nothing approaching the hydraulic motion of, say, Lenovo’s ThinkPads.
But the most offensive thing about these laptops is how gaudy they are. There’s a ridiculous glossy plastic surround that sits on either side of the touchpad, highlighted by LED lighting. It’s attractive only insofar as it inevitably attracts the eye — but it’s mindless decoration for absolutely no user benefit. The Odyssey 17 also has a "Beast Mode" button above the keyboard — which Samsung at least promises to rename before releasing the laptop — and that flips the switch to turn on max performance mode in the included Odyssey Control software suite.
I spent a good amount of time asking Samsung’s CES reps why anyone should want to buy the company’s gaming laptops over other, more established and experienced brands. If Samsung had a different look, if it had used some of its higher-end materials or displays, I’d understand its differentiation — but Samsung is seemingly deliberate in aiming to be exactly like everyone else. Except it’s failing even at that, because leaders like Alienware and Asus have advanced to using more metal in their construction and better screens and keyboards. Samsung’s answer was that it’s "the most vertically integrated PC maker in the market" — which is utterly immaterial to a PC buyer that just wants to buy the best possible computer Gmail Contact Number
Samsung Electronics is set to launch a new laptop computer next month, and it is bound to turn heads with its very own S Pen technology. The news comes amid the South Korean tech giant’s preparations for the imminent unveiling of its Galaxy Note 8 phablet.
On Monday, Samsung stated that it is going to roll out its S Pen-equipped laptop in its home country this September. Called Notebook 9 Pen, the device is designed to be a powerhouse that’s been outfitted with the latest technologies. For instance, the device will act like a laptop version of the Note series since it comes with its own S Pen stylus and certain note-taking software features.
Korea Herald reports that the Notebook 9 Pen will come with Intel’s latest eighth-generation processor, which according to Samsung will offer up to 40 percent better speed than devices powered by the seventh-generation Intel chips. There’s also a big reason why Apple’s biggest rival has chosen the eighth-gen processor. Apparently, the notebook needs it to smoothly run video clips that are in 4K Ultra High Definition resolution. The latest chip is also capable of operating virtual reality content, but Samsung did not confirm if the laptop will have this type of functionality.
Samsung pointed out that the Notebook 9 Pen does not differ that much from the previous Notebook 9 series when it comes to the hardware side of things. It would still look like its predecessor, and it would also come with a 360-degree hinge so users can configure or position the laptop to their liking. As expected, the laptop will have a touchscreen display and would come with Samsung’s Air Command software for editing documents, sketching or drawing and taking notes.
The company did not disclose the exact launch date of the Notebook 9 Pen and vaguely stated that it is due to arrive next month. Pricing for the device is also unknown at this point. Moreover, Samsung did not indicate if its upcoming laptop would also be launched in other major markets like the U.S.
Meanwhile, Samsung is poised to finally unveil the Galaxy Note 8 this week. The successor to the now defunct Galaxy Note 7 is expected be the company’s biggest Note-branded smartphone yet. Samsung has even accidentally confirmed speculations about the phone’s size when it published renders of the Note 8 on its U.S. website only to remove them shortly after.
The leak, which was first spotted by YouTuber Tim Schofield, included information about the device’s primary features. Part of the list is the confirmation that the phablet would follow in the footsteps of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ by sporting a huge Infinity Display with an 18:5:9 aspect ratio. There’s also mention of Bixby and S Pen. In addition, one render shows the dual cameras on the back of the phone along with the rear-positioned fingerprint sensor.
Aside from being a physically large smartphone, the Galaxy Note 8’s price tag is also expected to be just as huge. Forbes believes that due to the price bump, some consumers who are fond of the Galaxy Note series might draw the line after learning of the Note 8’s retail price. Nevertheless, the phablet is still expected to lure in more consumers knowing that it is a flagship device that’s packed with all of Samsung’s latest smartphone technologies. Samsung Electronics projected its best quarterly operating profit in more than threeyears thanks to solid component sales, shrugging off turmoil at home where the conglomerate’s de facto leader Lee Jae-yong has been caught up in a sweeping corruption scandal.
Booming sales of memory chips and flat-panel displays have helped the South Korean technology group stage a strong comeback in the wake of last year’s costly safety debacle and ultimate demise of the fire-prone Galaxy Note 7 smartphone.
Operating profit for the first three months of this year was estimated at Won9.9tn ($8.7bn), up48 per cent from a year earlier, Samsung said on Friday. This was higher than the Won9.4tn average forecast in a Thomson Reuters poll. Sales were projected to have inched up to Won50tn.
“Earnings from components, especially semiconductors, are so strong that they can more than offset the huge losses from last year’s Note 7 failure,” said Lee Seung-woo, an analyst at IBK Securities.
Memory chips and flexible displays accounted for about 68 per cent of Samsung’s operating profit in the final quarter of 2016, a change from previous years when the smartphone business was the main contributor.
Samsung did not provide a divisional breakdown. It will release detailed first-quarter results later this month. But analysts estimate operatingprofit from the semiconductor division hit a record Won6tn, and forecast that demand would continue to exceed supply throughout the year as the popularity of internet-connected devices continues to grow.
Analysts expect Samsung’s mobile division to have generated an operating profit of about Won2tn ($1.8bn) in the first quarter after the company suffered more than $5.3bn losses last year due to the withdrawal of the Note 7.
Samsung is now counting on the new Galaxy S8 smartphone, which goes on sale on April 21, to help salve itsbruised image. “We are very positive about the new phone. It will give a big boost to Samsung’s earnings from the second quarter,” said IBK’s Mr Lee.
Analysts say the S8 flagship smartphone, launched in New York late last month, should help Samsung regain its global market leadership after the South Korean company was edged out of the top spot by Apple in the fourth quarter of last year. The new phone, featuring an improved design and many upgraded features, is expected to outsell its predecessor S7 device, which shipped 48.5m units in its first year.
“There isn’t any significant rival from the Android side in the premium segment and we see strong pent-up demand for a new Samsung device,” said Kim Young-woo, analyst at SK Securities.
Should you buy the Samsung Notebook 9 or the Dell XPS 15?
Samsung's updated 15-inch Notebook 9 is here, and it's turning heads thanks to a significant overhaul. If you're in the market for a new laptop, you might be wondering how it stacks up against another 15-inch favorite, the XPS 15 from Dell. Our Executive Editor Daniel Rubino reviewed the XPS 15 9560 and the Notebook 9 15" Ext model, which is the configuration we'll be focusing on in this comparison.
Ready to see how they compare? We start with the specifications and move through the similarities and differences to give you a better idea of which laptop is better suited for you. From the outside, both of these laptops look similar. Their dimensions are nearly the same, they both have appealing rounded corners, and both have a metal finish. If you were to pick them up, however, you would immediately notice a big difference. Rubino, in his Notebook 9 review, had this to say:
It is hard to put into words just how light the Notebook 9 is compared to other 15-inch laptops. The Dell XPS 15 and HP Spectre x360 15 both weigh around 4.4lbs (2kg), making the Notebook 9 nearly 2lbs (0.9kg) lighter.
That is a significant weight difference and a big deal for anyone who likes to forget they're carrying around a laptop. The body and keyboard deck are both rigid, but there is some flex to the lid, which i inevitable with something this thin. Despite the weight of the Notebook 9, you can still open the lid with one hand, something you can't do with the XPS 15. Once the laptops are open, plenty more differences become evident. The XPS 15 sports a carbon fiber finish on its inside that is soft to touch and doesn't heat up under your palms. When closed, it has a sort of "oreo effect" due to the metal outside and the carbon fiber inside.
The Notebook 9 sticks with a metal finish inside with keys to match. It is comparable to the Apple MacBook, and anyone who loves a uniform look on a laptop will love the Notebook 9's appearance. Display
You power on the Notebook 9 and the display comes alive. The device has a 1080p non-touch display that is classic Samsung quality. From Rubino's review:
Nonetheless, Samsung did an outstanding job here with the Notebook 9's display. It's sharp, exceptionally bright, and the color saturation is excellent. There is no 4K option, and there is no touch option for the Notebook 9. It also measures 15 inches rather than the more common 15.6-inches we're seeing on a lot of laptops. The bezels around the display are larger compared to those on the XPS 15, but are still relatively slim when compared to other laptops. If you don't go in for touch displays or 4K, the Notebook 9 is a solid contender.

If you need a laptop with a 4K touch display, you'll want to check out the XPS 15. Here's what Rubino, in his XPS 15 review, had to say:
It's a remarkable display and the best 4K panel on the market for a laptop bar none. It has a very high color gamut ("100 percent minimum Adobe RGB," according to Dell, and in my tests it seems to hold up, though it's closer to 97 percent) with excellent contrast. And it is brilliant.
Sure, the XPS 15 is available in a Full HD matte configuration that is also a fantastic display, but when you compare the FHD version to the Notebook 9 with similar hardware inside, the price difference jumps to a point where you'd probably be better of going with the Notebook 9 and saving a few hundred dollars.
However, if it's 4K and touch that you crave in a laptop, your only choice between these two is the XPS 15. A slim bezel only adds to the attraction, and disappointment will be hard to come by when you first see the clarity and color.
